A pair of fancy coloured diamond earrings sold for $57.4 million at Sotheby’s on Tuesday, setting a new record.
The two pear-shaped stones, a 14.54-carat, fancy vivid blue, internally flawless diamond, fetched $42.1 million and the 16-carat, fancy intense pink, VVS2-clarity diamond, attracted a winning bid of $15.3 million, set a record for the most expensive earrings ever sold at auction.
“In the last five to 10 years, the price seems to be escalating rapidly. And we just sold this world record stone, and that was a pink diamond,” said David Bennett, worldwide chairman of Sotheby’s International Jewellery division, ahead of the auction. “Certainly people who own important colored diamonds are aware that the market is strong.”
